What's happening right now?

Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
  2. Don't break a window or pry the door. It adds damage without getting you in sooner.
  3. Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Leave the lock alone: pushing the piece further in makes it harder to get out.
  2. Keep the piece you still have. It helps cut a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Don't force the key. A bent or broken key makes it harder.
  2. Skip the oil, the glue and the hot water. They make it worse.

Lost keys

Safely, right now

  1. If your address was with the keys, treat the lock as known to whoever finds them.
  2. Don't hide a spare key anywhere outside in the meantime, not even under the mat.

Sometimes the honest answer is a full lock change: a cylinder that fights every key, a handle set that no longer matches the door, a break-up where rekeying feels like half a measure. For homes across Fairview we replace the hardware, match the finish to what is already on the house and hand over new keys.

The fix, explained · Fairview

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceYou reached the front step with the groceries, patted every pocket twice, and the house key is simply not there.

The fix

Different locks call for different openings, and a lockout visit starts by reading the hardware on your door. A spring latch in a knob or lever behaves differently from a deadbolt, a mortise lock in an older home has its own internals, and a high-security cylinder resists shortcuts that work on builder-grade hardware.

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceThe heavy glass door has been scraping the threshold for weeks.

The fix

Authority for a business is a question about the company, not just the individual at the door. An owner shows identification and something connecting them to the premises, such as the lease or the business registration.

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe key went in like any other morning, you turned it, and something gave with a small metallic click.

The fix

Freezing is one of the bigger seasonal causes of broken keys here. Meltwater runs into the keyway during a thaw and freezes overnight, so the plug is locked in ice, and most people respond by turning harder.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairSomeone smashed the little window beside the door, reached in and turned the thumb-turn.

The fix

Break-in damage lock repair is the visit that turns a forced door back into a locked one. The locksmith first confirms you own, rent or manage the property, then looks at everything the attack touched: the lock, the bolt, the strike plate and wood behind it, the door edge, the hinges and any glass beside the door.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe shop's lever handle goes down as usual, but the latch inside the mortise case never pulls back.

The fix

Most seized locks can be saved, and keeping your existing hardware is the aim. A cylinder that has stopped turning is usually recoverable with cleaning and fresh internal parts.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYou were shovelling the driveway after dark and the ring must have slid out of your coat pocket somewhere under a metre of snow.

The fix

A missing key is also the moment a household can stop carrying four. Because a rekey sets a fresh combination in every cylinder anyway, the locksmith can set the same combination in all of them, provided they share a keyway family, so the front door, back door, garage entry and side gate open with one key.

Book a lock repair in Fairview

Every job in Fairview starts with a proper look before anyone touches a tool. The locksmith checks the cylinder, the latch, the strike and the way the door sits in its frame, then tells you what he found and what he suggests. The price is given at the door once that look is done, so it reflects the actual hardware rather than a guess, and it is the same fee at any hour.

  • Time to understand first. We do not start work until you understand what we found. That might take two sentences or a longer chat; either is fine.

  • A quiet, careful approach. Locks are opened and fitted with patience rather than force wherever the design allows. Your door and frame matter as much as the lock.

  • Everything tested, everything explained. Before leaving we run through each lock and key with you, show you anything new and leave a note of what was done.

The manager who holds the only set of office keys is on a plane. The team is gathered in the corridor outside the suite, the landlord's office does not open for another hour, and the client meeting is at nine-thirty.

The shop's aluminum door has a bent meeting stile and the hookbolt is jammed half out. The alarm did its job and the display is untouched, but the entrance will not close properly and opening time is hours away.

Someone tried the door last winter. The frame took it, but the strike plate is bent, one screw hole is stripped, and the bolt sits in the pocket at a slight angle. It still locks, and it still bothers you every night.

Deadbolt Installation

The new manager took over the shop last month and only now needs the back-office safe open, but the combination the previous owner was supposed to leave in writing never turned up anywhere in the handover file.

Safe Opening & Combination Change

The new access-control reader at the staff entrance works fine going in, but nobody has sorted out the door's exit side, and right now a card reader and a pushbar exist as two separate ideas.

Panic & Exit Hardware

The electric strike buzzes the moment the receptionist presses the release button, but the door still needs a shoulder to get past the latch, as though the two pieces were never matched.

Commercial-Grade Lock Replacement

You dropped the duffel bag in the trunk, closed the lid with your elbow, and heard the keys land inside a heartbeat too late. The cabin is locked as well, and the only way into that trunk seems to be a key you can see nowhere.

Car Lockout Service

Hands comparing detached lock cylinders beside loose keys on a workbench. — Broken Key Extraction, Fairview

8 / 9

Since the remote starter was installed last month, the original key has started acting strangely, the car catches on the first turn some mornings and refuses outright on others. Nothing about the key itself changed, but whatever the installer touched under the dash seems to be arguing with it.

Transponder Key Programming

A copy cut at a hardware kiosk turns the ignition on some mornings and skips it on others, occasionally sticking halfway and needing a wiggle that the original key never required.

What the census means at the door

38%

Homes of every age. About 38% of homes in Mississauga were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where housing is mixed, doors that have been replaced sit beside doors that never were. A new door in an old frame, or an old door in a repaired frame, needs its strike and hinges checked together so the whole assembly works as one.

37%

Single-detached houses make up about 37% of homes in Mississauga (2021 Census).

Townhouse rows often share a keyway chosen by the builder. A locksmith can move a household onto a keyway of its own so a neighbour's key, or a key from the construction phase, no longer has any chance of fitting.

Good questions about locks

Advice · (289) 805-7422

What is an interchangeable core, and how do I know if we have one?

An interchangeable core is a small, self-contained cylinder that slides out of the lock with a special control key and drops back in on a new combination. Look at the keyway: a figure-eight shaped face on a lever or mortise housing is the usual sign. Buildings choose them because a lost key or a staff change is handled by swapping the core rather than taking the lock apart, and a locksmith can carry cores pinned to your system.

I rent. Who arranges the repair, and can I change the lock myself?

Tell your landlord or property manager as soon as the police have been called; provincial tenancy law makes the landlord responsible for repairs to the unit, and most will arrange the locksmith. A tenant may not change locks without the landlord's agreement, and a landlord who changes them must give the tenant keys, so the visit is coordinated between you. If you arrange securing yourself in an emergency, keep the receipt and the record of what was done for both sides.

Can the new deadbolt use the same key as my other doors?

Usually, yes. If the new lock shares a keyway with your existing cylinders, the locksmith repins it on the bench so your current key operates it, and nothing changes on anyone's ring. If the keyways differ, the other doors can be brought onto the new key instead. Say which key you want to keep before the hardware is chosen, because keyway is part of picking the lock.

Should I change my safe's combination even if it still opens fine?

It depends on who still knows the old one. If a bookkeeper, manager or previous owner who had the combination is no longer with the business, resetting it closes that gap even though nothing about the lock itself has failed. A safe that only the current staff have ever known the code to generally does not need changing on that basis alone.
